The substantial 8½" width allows you to place your whole hand on the ruler to apply pressure for accurate cutting.  It is the perfect width to trim borders.  The 12½" length is easy to manipulate and lets you cut the width of the fabric on the fold.  It 30, 45 and 60 degree angles.
